The health minor may be completed by students in Secondary or Elementary Education programs or "added on" by teachers already licensed to teach at an appropriate level in Wisconsin. See this link for information on the Health minor for Elementary Education students.
The Secondary teaching minor in Health Education is primarily available for students with majors leading to secondary certification in English, Family and Consumer Science, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, or school nurse certification. This minor prepares teachers to (1) teach health as a separate course or as a planned integral part of other areas of instruction and (2) assist the school administration and teaching staff in developing a broad school health program. Note: Certification in a major area of interest must accompany the completion of this minor; students cannot be certified to teach only in a minor area.
Complete a minimum of 30 credits to include all course work below. A minimum 2.75 GPA is required, based on all UW-Madison course work included in the minor requirements.
Upon acceptance into their major program in the School of Education, students should meet immediately with the Health Education program advisor to work out a schedule and to be authorized for required Curriculum courses 541, 542, 561, and 567. Registration in this course work is contingent upon this meeting.
Choose at least 8 credits from the following courses:
Substitutions: A wide variety of other relevant courses related to teaching about health are offered on campus. Substitution of another course (maximum of 3 credits) is possible but must be approved in advance by a health program advisor. Students admitted to a program in fall 2004 only may also apply Psych 201, 202, or 281 toward the 8 credits.
All individuals seeking an initial Wisconsin State teacher's license after August 31, 2004, will be required to take an approved content examination. These tests, the Praxis II: Subject Assessments/Specialty Area Tests, are offered through the Educational Testing Service (ETS). Teacher education students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison must pass the required content examination in their area(s) of certification before they enter their final semester of student teaching. Passing the content examination is required for program completion. Individual teacher education programs may require students to take the examination at a specific point within this time period. Students who have already taken the content examination prior to being admitted to one of UW-Madison's teacher education programs must request the Educational Testing Service to send an official score report to Education Academic Services.
