Certificate in Global Perspectives

It is increasingly evident that we live as members of multiple communities, from local communities to a world or global community. Understanding the variety of cultures, values, traditions of a world community and the ways in which these find expression in one’s national, state and local communities becomes increasingly important to participating successfully as a global citizen and in professions where cross-cultural understanding and interaction is an essential part of one’s work. The University of Wisconsin-Madison stresses the importance of an international perspective in university education and aims to develop the global competence of students.

The School of Education Global Perspectives Certificate is an interdisciplinary program of study offered for School of Education undergraduates. To fulfill requirements for this certificate, students mainly take courses in social sciences, humanities, and/or sciences that examine aspects of “non-Western/non-European” cultures, histories, arts, and environments. This focus does not subordinate western traditions to other traditions; rather, it expresses the belief that breadth in a liberal arts education should include study of cultures of non-western origin in addition to study of multicultural traditions within a western cultural context.

Credits used to fulfill the requirements for the certificate can also be offered to meet other liberal studies requirements or, for Elementary Education majors, in partial fulfillment of a minor. In meeting the goals of this certificate program, students will:

• Extend their awareness of the variety within and among world cultures, as well as their sense of their own roles as world citizens;
• Respect and value diversity and treat all people with respect and dignity;
• Develop a critical understanding of how the world works economically, politically, socially, culturally, technologically, and environmentally;
• Inform their professional work in teaching, art, dance, kinesiology with an international perspective.

Students must complete the requirements below (21 credits total). Students must earn a 2.75 cumulative grade point average across all certificate courses. Elementary Education students must complete another three-credit course approved by the Global Perspectives Certificate advisor to meet that program’s minor requirement.

Students must complete the following requirements:

• 9 credits to include
• one 3-credit course in United States/European history
• Either Integrated Liberal Studies 209 Introduction to Global Cultures OR Anthropology 104 Cultural Anthropology and Human Development, 3 credits
• Educational Policy Studies 340 Globalization and Education, 3 credits, taken as a capstone course and including an integrative paper or project (such as a teaching unit).
• 12 additional credits from the approved list of “non-Western/non-European” courses below, to include
• at least one course from each of two world areas (Africa, Arctic, East Asia, Latin America, Middle East-Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia);
• at least one course at 300 level or above.
