French Education Major and Minor Prerequisites and Requirements

Faculty advisor: Professor François Tochon, 144D Teacher Education Building, 263-7570, ftochon@education.wisc.edu. Students not yet admitted to this program should consult with advising staff at Education Academic Services (EAS), Rust-Schreiner Halls, 115 North Orchard Street, 262-1651.

Prerequisite Course Work

Majors must complete French 101, 102, 203, and 204 prior to beginning the major requirements. These courses may be used to meet the liberal studies requirements, and are prerequisites to all the courses listed in the French major.

Major Requirements

Complete a minimum of 36 credits to include at least 24 upper-level/advanced credits (300 and above). The credits of the major required for admission must be taken from this course work. At least 15 credits of upper-level major course work must be completed in residence on the UW-Madison campus. Students majoring in French should consult with Professor Tochon, the faculty advisor, early in their academic career. Courses are French listings unless otherwise indicated.

Note: It is strongly recommended that students complete fourth year language practice (French 311 and above), phonetics (French 590), and civilization (French 347 or 348) course work before the first Methods/Student Teaching semester of the professional program.

Minor Requirements

The French minor requires a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75, based on all French minor course work taken on the UW-Madison campus. The graduation grade point average may be modified by the last 60 credits rule (see Application and Admission Information for details).

Students interested in completing a certification minor in French must also complete a major in another certification subject area; it is not possible to be certified only in a minor area. Contact the program coordinator to discuss the feasibility of combining this minor with the major subject area—not all combinations may be possible. Interested students must apply and be admitted to the French program. Admission is limited and competitive. All students, whether completing their first degree or adding on a teaching minor to a prior certification, should expect to complete a methods course, practicum and student teaching experience in the minor to be recommended for certification; consult with the program coordinator. The oral proficiency exam and immersion experiences discussed above are also required.

Students in Elementary Education may complete this minor as an "academic" minor only. Completion of this course work provides a depth of study in an academic discipline, but does not lead to certification to teach this language in the elementary school.

Complete a minimum of 24 credits. Courses are French listings unless otherwise indicated. French 101, 102, 203, and 204 must be completed prior to beginning the minor requirements.
