Elementary Health Minor

Complete a minimum of 24 credits to include all course work below. A minimum 2.75 GPA is required, based on all UW-Madison course work included in the minor requirements.

Core Requirements—18-20 credits

• Kines 116 First Aid, 2 or certification in both first aid and CPR from a campus or community organization. Documentation of current certification (either adult or child) must be presented to the health education program advisor. If equivalent is used, the minor will require only 24 credits.
• Human Biology requirement. Complete one of the following:
  Gen&WS 103 Women and Their Bodies in Health and Disease, 3
  Anthro 105 Principles of Biological Anthropology, 3
  Genetics/Zoology/Botany 133 Genetics and Human Affairs, 3
  Physiol 335 Physiology, 5
• Curric 501 Health Information for Teachers, 3. This course should be taken first in the Curriculum course sequence (fall and spring semesters). Pre-authorization is required to enroll.
• Curric 541 Organization and Administration of School Health Programs, 3 (spring semester)
• Curric 542 Teacher Education About Alcohol and Other Drugs, 3 (spring semester)
• Curric 561 Teacher Education in Human Sexuality, 3 (fall semester)
• Curric 567 Issues, Materials and Methods in Health Education, 3 (this course should be taken last in the course sequence; fall semester)

Breadth Requirements—6 credits

Substitutions: A wide variety of other relevant courses related to teaching about health are offered on campus. Substitution of another course (maximum of 3 credits) is possible but must be approved in advance by a health program advisor. Students admitted to the Elementary Education program in Fall, 2004 may also apply Psych 201, 202, or 281 toward the six credits. This option will not be available to student admitted after fall 2004.
