Dance Discipline-Related, Major, and Elective Requirements
For Students Admitted to the Program Fall 2007 or Later
Discipline-Related Requirements
Complete the two courses listed below for both degrees:
- Dance 200 Writing Dance Performance, 3 cr. Dance
200 also meets the General Education Communication Part B requirement.
- Anatomy 329 Human Anatomy Lab, 2 cr, or Anatomy for Dancers (Dance 560), 2
cr
Major Requirements: Bachelor of Science
Complete a minimum of 59 credits. At least 15 upper-level major Dance credits
(numbered 300 and above) must be taken in residence on the UW-Madison campus.
Courses are Dance listings unless otherwise indicated.
- Modern Dance Technique. Complete a minimum of 15 credits from among Dance
111, 112, 211, 212, 311, 312, 411, or 412. At least 6 credits must be from
311, 312, 411, or 412.
- Ballet Technique. Complete a minimum of 8 credits from among Dance 125,
225, 325, or 425. At least 4 credits must be 225 or higher.
- World Dance. Complete a minimum of 2 credits. World Dance courses include
African, Asian, and Javanese dance. Students may also select from World Dance
workshops listed under Dance 001 or 560. Jazz and Ballroom courses do
not count toward this requirement.
- 144 Rhythmic Training for Dancers, 2
- 151 Movement as Material Through Improvisation, 2
- 161 Somatic Theory and Practices, 2
- 167 Introduction to Movement Analysis, 2
- 170 Dance Production, 2
- 171 Dance Production Laboratory, 1

- 265 Dance History I: Dance Art from the Renaissance to the 1950's, 3
- 351 Video Design for the Performing and Visual Arts OR 420 Sound Design
for the Performing and Visual Arts, 3
- 355 Dance Composition II, 2, or 455 Dance Composition III, 2
- 365 Dance History II: Directions and Issues of Contemporary Dance, 3
- Dance Repertory Theater. Complete a minimum of 4 credits from among 451,
452, 551, or 552.
- 440 Senior Seminar, 3
Major Requirements: Bachelor of Fine Arts
Complete a minimum of 79 credits. At least 15 upper-level major Dance credits
(numbered 300 and above) must be taken in residence on the UW-Madison campus.

- Modern Dance Technique. Complete a minimum of 18 credits from among Dance
111, 112, 211, 212, 311, 312, 411, or 412. At least 9 credits must be from
311, 312, 411, or 412.
- Ballet Technique. Complete a minimum of 14 credits from among Dance 125,
225, 325, or 425. At least 10 credits must be 225 or higher.
- World Dance. Complete a minimum of 4 credits. World Dance courses include
African, Asian, and Javanese dance. Students may also select from World Dance

- 455 Dance Composition III, 2
- 440 Senior Seminar, 3
- Public Presentation. BFA students must create one solo and one group piece
(trio or larger) after the completion of Dance 255. These works must be
submitted for faculty approval and publicly presented in concert.
