Dance Discipline-Related, Major, and Elective Requirements
For Students Admitted to the Program Before Fall 2007
Discipline-Related Requirements
Complete the two courses listed below:
- Dance 200 Writing Dance Performance, 3, or approved
substitute. Also meets the General Education Communication Part B
requirement and can be counted toward the liberal studies requirements.
- Anatomy 329 Human Anatomy-Kinesiology, 2, or approved substitute. Anatomy
329 can be counted toward the liberal studies Science requirement.
Major Requirements: Bachelor of Science
Complete a minimum of 58 credits. At least 15 upper-level major Dance credits
(numbered 300 and above) must be taken in residence on the UW-Madison campus.
Courses are Dance listings unless otherwise indicated.
- Modern Dance Technique. Complete a minimum of 18 credits from among Dance
111, 112, 211, 212, 311, 312, 411, or 412. At least 6 credits must be from
311, 312, 411, or 412.
- Ballet Technique. Complete a minimum of 4 credits from among Dance 125,
225, 325, or 425. At least 2 credits must be from 225, 325, or 425.
- World Dance. Complete a minimum of 2 credits. World Dance courses
include African, Asian, and Javanese dance. Students may also select from
World Dance workshops listed under Dance 001 or 560.
- 144 Rhythmic Training for Dancers, 2
- 151 Movement as Material Through Improvisation, 2
- 161 Somatic Theory and Practices, 2
- 167 Introduction to Movement Analysis, 2
- 170 Dance Production, 2
- 171 Dance Production Lab, 1
- 241 Music Fundamentals for Dancers, 3
- 255 Movement Composition for the Performing and Visual Arts, 2
- 265 Dance: An Introductory Survey, 3
- 351 Video Design for the Performing and Visual Arts OR 420 Sound Design
for the Performing and Visual Arts, 3
- 355 Dance Composition II or 455 Dance Composition III, 2
- Dance Repertory Theater. Complete a minimum of 4 credits from among 451,
452, 551, or 552.
- Additional Dance courses to total a minimum of 58 credits.
Major Requirements: Bachelor of Fine Arts
Complete a minimum of 82 credits. At least 15 upper-level major Dance credits
(numbered 300 and above) must be taken in residence on the UW-Madison campus.

- Modern Dance Technique. Complete a minimum of 18 credits from among Dance
111, 112, 211, 212, 311, 312, 411, or 412. At least 6 credits must be from

225, 325, or 425. At least 10 credits must be from 225, 325, or 425.
- World Dance. Complete a minimum of 4 credits. World Dance courses include

452, 551, or 552.
- 455 Dance Composition III, 2
- 555 Advanced Composition, 2
- Music 103 Music Cultures of the World, 3
- Theatre 150 Introduction to Acting, 3
- Aesthetics. Complete one course from the Department of Art History,
Philosophy 253 or 553 for a minimum of 3 credits.
- Public Presentation. Students must create one solo and
one group piece (trio or larger) after completion of 255. These works
must be faculty approved for public presentation in a concert.
- Additional Dance courses, if necessary, to total a minimum of 82 credits.
