Afro-American Studies Minor
For Elementary Education Students
The Afro-American minor may be completed by students in Elementary Education.
Besides consulting with Education Academic Services staff at Rust-Schreiner
Halls, 115 North Orchard Street, 262-1651, students may also wish to consult with
the Afro-American Studies undergraduate advisor, 4141 Helen C. White Hall,
263-1642. A 2.75 grade point average is
required, based on all Afro-American Studies course work taken on the UW-Madison
campus.
The minor in Afro-American Studies requires a minimum of 24 credits,
including the course work below. At least 12 credits of the minor course work
must be in upper-level courses (300-699) taken in residence at UW-Madison.
Courses are Afro-American Studies unless otherwise indicated.
Complete at least one course from each of the three areas of concentration:
- Area 1: Afro-American Culture and Literature. Course options include 101,

320, 366, 403, 413, 503, 504, 505, 509, 525, 540, 602, 604, 605, 662, 672,
674, 675, 676, 677.
- Area 2: Afro-American History. Course options include 101, 231, 233, 260,
277, 297, 302, 303, 323, 330, 347, 430, 467, 628, 631, 635, 636, 671.
- Area 3: Afro-American Society. Course options include 101, 151, 260, 261,
271, 277, 297, 423, 442, 443, 460, 461, 502, 521, 523, 567, 577, 651, 673.
- Complete at least one course with a cross-cultural or comparative focus.
Course options include 241, 260, 262, 277, 297, 320, 330, 347, 413, 505. This
course cannot be applied toward the area requirements above.
- Additional Afro-American Studies course work, if necessary, to total 24
credits.
